Why So Much Fuss Over Protein?

Let me set the record straight from the git-go. Protein is certainly important, but most of your calories should actually come from carbohydrates not protein. Why? Because carbs are the primary fuel source for all the cells of the body and the CEO---the brain. If the body cells and brain don't have enough energy, you're going nowhere.

Fiber Options at Seattle Tacoma Airport

Posted by Sid Lloyd on 31 March 2010 | 2 Comments

Ever hung out in SeaTac?  The Seattle/Tacoma airport nestled, not surprisingly, between Seattle and Tacoma.  In the center of the terminal (past security) if you are in a rush, you can still get some good high-fiber options.  On the south side of the food court, you find three good places from which you can assemble a quick high-fiber meal. Looking from left to right, Qdoba Mexican Grill, MAKI of Japan and our old potato purveyor, Wendy's.

Let's face it.  We're all lazy, or at least would like to be.  But don't feel guilty.  It's human nature to expend as little energy as possible.  We also naturally seek pleasure, and avoid discomfort. If changing behavior to lose weight means giving up things we like to do, causes discomfort, or takes much effort, then it's very likely we're just not going to do it. So let's minimize the pain.  Here's a list of 5 ways you can be lazy, enjoy good food, lose weight, and not suffer while doing it:

What's Rye Got to do With It?

Posted by Diana Fleming, PhD on 19 March 2010 | 1 Comments

In The Full Plate Diet, rye is at the head of our honorable mention list of fiber-rich grains. But let's be real. How many people include rye as a regular part of their diet? Some people have never heard of the stuff, while those that have usually associate it with rye or pumpernickel bread, which they hardly ever eat. To make matters worse, the rye flour usually used in rye bread in the US is not whole grain, so much of the fiber is gone. This is not true for rye flour used in the Nordic countries of Finland, Denmark, and Sweden.

Quick Lunch Idea: Progresso High Fiber Soups

Posted by Michelle Jones on 15 March 2010 | 0 Comments

Let's give a hand of applause to Progresso for being a leader in making their new High Fiber Soups available at your local supermarket. For just $1.50, you can purchase a can of soup boasting 7g of fiber per serving (each can has 2 servings). With flavors such as Creamy Tomato Basil, Hearty Vegetable and Noodle, Chicken Tuscany, and Homestyle Minestrone there's enough variety for even the pickiest taste buds. And surprisingly enough, I liked all of the flavors tried thus far (which says a lot considering I find most commercial soups disgusting, to say the least).
